Application of thermal imaging and hyperspectral remote sensing for crop water deficit stress monitoring

Gopal Krishna et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of different rice genotypes to water deficit stress using thermal imaging, visible imaging, RWC, and CWSI, and identified drought-tolerant and drought-resistant genotypes. Effective relationships between RWC and CWSI, as well as canopy reflectance spectra and CWSI, were established, with 10 optimal wavebands related to water deficit stress identified. This research contributes to the quick detection of water deficit stress in crops and can aid in the development of drought-tolerant rice genotypes in the future.

Appropriate Time to Measure Leaf and Stem Water Potential in North-South Oriented, Vertically Shoot-Positioned Vineyards

Tian Tian et al.

Summary: The study investigated the diurnal changes in vine water status and the appropriate time to measure leaf water potential and stem water potential in Willamette Valley vineyards. It found that measuring LWP over a four-hour period starting at midday on warm sunny days, and measuring SWP in the two-hour period between 1500 hr and 1700 hr is most critical for assessing vine water status and scheduling irrigation.

Global irrigation contribution to wheat and maize yield

Xuhui Wang et al.

Summary: The study utilizes a Bayesian framework to analyze the global irrigation contribution to wheat and maize crop yields, finding that at a global scale, ΔY is 349% for wheat and 22% for maize. Comparing irrigation demands with renewable water supply, it is suggested that a significant portion of wheat and maize agriculture may not achieve yield gap closure utilizing current river discharge, raising doubts about the potential of irrigation to mitigate climate change impacts.
