GRACE Fast Mascons From Spherical Harmonics and a Regularization Design Trade Study

M. J. Croteau et al.

Summary: The study shows that using a new mascon estimation system can improve signal recovery with more efficient computation, better leveraging of spherical harmonics, and improved performance compared to past methods. Spherical expansions to degree and order 60 are sufficient to study most basins, with larger expansions helping to further localize signals. Including inter-mascon correlations and regional boundaries in regularization significantly enhances signal recovery.
