Antibacterial properties of starch-reduced graphene oxide-polyiodide nanocomposite

Kannan Badri Narayanan et al.

Summary: The development of graphene-polyiodide nanocomposites by utilizing soluble starch biopolymer as a functionalizing and reducing agent has shown to be effective in creating nanomaterials with superior antibacterial properties for food packaging applications. The nanocomposites exhibited good antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus, showcasing potential as high-efficacy antibacterial starch-based nanomaterials.UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy were used to confirm the presence of polyiodide in the starch-reduced graphene oxide.

Graphene oxide enhanced ionic liquid plasticisation of chitosan/alginate bionanocomposites

Pei Chen et al.

Summary: The effect of graphene oxide or reduced graphene oxide on chitosan/alginate matrices is highly dependent on the type of plasticiser used. Glycerol-plasticised matrices showed increased chitosan crystallinity and ductility when including graphene oxide, while matrices plasticised by [C(2)mim][OAc] exhibited improved mechanical properties and reduced surface hydrophilicity when graphene oxide was added. Reduced graphene oxide was less effective than graphene oxide in promoting chitosan-alginate interactions and even increased surface hydrophilicity, but resulted in reduced crystallinity and higher ionic conductivity in both plasticiser types.

Graphene oxide-cerium oxide hybrids for enhancement of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings

Lingwei Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that incorporating GO-CeO2 composite materials into epoxy resin coatings significantly improves the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coatings, mainly by increasing hardness, elastic modulus, and reducing friction coefficient. Furthermore, the composite coatings exhibit excellent barrier performance against salt spray.

A facile method for coal to graphene oxide and its application to a biosensor

Seul-Yi Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a facile one-pot process using HNO3 to obtain graphene oxide from coal (Coal-GO) was successfully demonstrated. The synthesized Coal-GO was converted to reduced graphene oxide (Coalr-GO) and showed superior interaction with single stranded DNA aptamer compared to Graphite-GO. This could potentially lead to higher sensitivity chemiluminescence resonance energy transferbased biosensors.

Synthesis of Silver and Gold Nanoparticles in Sodium Alginate Matrix Enriched with Graphene Oxide and Investigation of Properties of the Obtained Thin Films

Nikola Nowak et al.

Summary: The study focused on the preparation of sodium alginate-based nanocomposites containing nanosilver and nanogold, with the incorporation of graphene oxide sheets for improved thermal stability. The characterization of the materials revealed the formation of 10-20 nm ball-shaped Ag and Au nanoparticles. Enzymatic hydrolysis showed the composites were more prone to degradation, with the sample containing nanosilver exhibiting the strongest bacteriostatic activity.

Physicochemical properties of chitosan/graphene oxide composite films and their effects on storage stability of palm-oil based margarine

F. Han Lyn et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that composite films containing 2.0% graphene oxide exhibited significantly lower water vapor and oxygen permeability, as well as higher radical scavenging activity. Margarine samples wrapped with CS1.5 GO2.0 film showed lower peroxide and TBARS values compared to samples wrapped with CS1.5 and LDPE films, indicating the great potential of CSGO composite film as an antioxidant food packaging material.
