NANOINDENTATION AND POROSITY FRACTAL DIMENSION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE WHISKER REINFORCED CEMENT PASTE AFTER ELEVATED TEMPERATURES (UP TO 900°C)

Li Li et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effects of high temperature on the microstructure of calcium carbonate whisker (CW) reinforced cement paste, finding that up to 500 degrees C, the properties are relatively stable but degrade significantly above 700 degrees C due to CW decomposition. The introduction of CW can lead to decreased pore parameters and increased fractal dimension up to 400 degrees C, but at higher temperatures, the pore structure deteriorates due to CW decomposition. Fractal dimension is shown to be a useful tool for evaluating changes in pore structure at high temperatures.

Characterization of mechanical behavior and mechanism of hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites after exposure to high temperatures

Deming Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HFRCCs) using steel fibers, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and calcium carbonate whisker (CW) with high temperature resistance and cost-effectiveness was developed. Partially replacing PVA fibers by CW could reduce the deterioration of strengths and flexural toughness of HFRCCs before 600 degrees C due to significant nucleation effect and restraining cracking of CW. Steel fiber was most effective to increase the residual mechanical properties among these fibers because of its higher thermostability and strong bond with matrix.

Investigation on the physical, mechanical and microstructural properties of epoxy polymer matrix with crumb rubber and short fibres for composite railway sleepers

Peng Yu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the incorporation of crumb rubber and short fibres into epoxy polymer core of composite railway sleepers to enhance mechanical performance and reduce costs. Experimental results show that short fibres improve flexural and shear performance, while crumb rubber enhances flexibility. A prediction equation and Analytical Hierarchy Process are used to predict critical properties and determine the most suitable polymer mix for railway sleeper application.
