Cassava starch: structural modification for development of a bio-adsorber for aqueous pollutants. Characterization and adsorption studies on methylene blue

Nancy Alvarado et al.

Summary: In this study, a potential bio-adsorber for contaminants in aqueous medium was developed by modifying starches with organic acids. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) was used as an example of a pollutant agent, and the study showed that physical and chemical interactions between modified starch and MB played a significant role in the adsorption process. The results also indicated that the pseudo-second-order model and intraparticle diffusion mechanism mainly explained the adsorption of MB by the modified starches.

Biomimetic amphiphilic chitosan nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity

Nuraziemah Ahmad et al.

Summary: Natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising source for new antimicrobial agents, but their clinical application is limited by poor bioavailability and toxicity. This study addresses these limitations by designing a new series of chitosan derivatives that mimic the structure of AMPs, with one derivative showing the most potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria while causing minimal cell death in tested cell lines. The results confirm the importance of cationicity and lipophilicity for selective bacteria targeting with the potential for chitosan nanoparticles as a new class of AMPs mimics effective against Gram-negative bacteria.
