Fruitless decommissions regulatory elements to implement cell-type-specific neuronal masculinization

Margarita V. Brovkina et al.

Summary: In male fruit flies, courtship behavior is controlled by the Fruitless transcription factor, which acts on different genes in various neuron classes to regulate sexual behavior. This study identified numerous chromatin accessibility changes downstream of Fruitless, with specific enhancers being active in different neuron types to masculinize the circuit. The findings suggest that Fruitless acts cell-type-specifically to decommission regulatory elements in male fruitless neurons.
