Fiducial displacements with improved accuracy for the global network of gravitational wave detectors

D. Bhattacharjee et al.

Summary: As sensitivity and reliability of detectors in the global network of gravitational wave observatories increase, the importance of calibration accuracy and precision also grows. By using photon calibrators that rely on power-modulated auxiliary laser beams, continuous calibration with improved accuracy in generating length fiducials has been achieved. Efforts to reduce relative calibration errors between elements of the detector network are ongoing through referencing the laser power calibration standards to a single transfer standard.

DQSEGDB: A time-interval database for storing gravitational wave observatory metadata

Ryan P. Fisher et al.

Summary: DQSEGDB is a database service used by multiple gravitational wave detectors for storing and accessing metadata, and has been applied in the analysis of all published detections in the advanced detector era. It currently holds around 600 million metadata entries and processes approximately 600,000 queries per day with an average response time of 0.317 seconds.

Distance measures in gravitational-wave astrophysics and cosmology

Hsin-Yu Chen et al.

Summary: This paper introduces quantities that characterize the sensitivity of gravitational-wave observatories to sources at cosmological distances, including horizon, range, response, and reach distances. These quantities take into account various important effects, such as cosmologically defined distances and volumes, cosmological redshift, cosmological time dilation, and rate density evolution. Unique aspects of gravitational wave detectors, like the variable sky sensitivity and the sensitivity scaling with distance, are also considered.

The MBTA pipeline for detecting compact binary coalescences in the third LIGO-Virgo observing run

F. Aubin et al.

Summary: The study describes a method for searching gravitational wave signals in LIGO-Virgo data, including both real-time detection and offline analysis. The experimental results demonstrate that MBTA has a low median latency of 36 seconds and has contributed to 42 alerts.

The Advanced Virgo photon calibrators

D. Estevez et al.

Summary: With the increasing sensitivities of LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA detectors, calibration of interferometers output becomes more important. Virgo used photon calibrators for the first time in observation O3, based on the gold standard to remove systematic bias. The uncertainty of PCal-induced displacement is expected to be further reduced in future observations.

A Gravitational-wave Measurement of the Hubble Constant Following the Second Observing Run of Advanced LIGO and Virgo

B. P. Abbott et al.

Summary: This paper presents a joint measurement of the Hubble constant using gravitational-wave detections, including neutron star and black hole detections, in conjunction with galaxy catalogs. The updated measurement shows improvement over previous values, with an additional contribution from a well-localized detection. The results pave the way for cosmology using gravitational-wave observations with or without transient electromagnetic counterparts.

Reducing scattered light in LIGO's third observing run

S. Soni et al.

Summary: In this paper, the scattering noise in the advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors during the third observing run from April 2019 to March 2020 is characterized. It is found that there are at least two different populations of scattering noise, and the origins of one of them are investigated along with mitigation techniques. Additionally, a strong correlation is observed between relative motion of two specific surfaces and the presence of scattered light, leading to the implementation of a technique to reduce this motion.

BayesWave analysis pipeline in the era of gravitational wave observations

Neil J. Cornish et al.

Summary: BayesWave is an algorithm for analyzing gravitational wave transient signals through frame functions and trans-dimensional sampling, adapting the model complexity to data requirements. The flexibility of the algorithm allows for a variety of analyses, including reconstructing unmodeled signals, cross-checks for compact binaries, and separating coherent signals from incoherent instrumental noise transients.

Measuring gravitational-wave higher-order multipoles

Cameron Mills et al.

Summary: The study investigates the observability of higher harmonics in gravitational wave signals emitted during the coalescence of binary black holes. It is found that the l = |m| = 3 harmonic is most significant in the sensitive band of ground-based detectors. By introducing the higher harmonic signal-to-noise ratio and using a simple threshold, it is shown that higher harmonics will be observable in a few percent of binaries, typically those with unequal masses and viewed close to edge-on.

Binary population synthesis with probabilistic remnant mass and kick prescriptions
