Soil and water conservation management on hill slopes in Southwest Ethiopia. I. Effects of soil bunds on surface runoff, erosion and loss of nutrients

Kebede Wolka et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the quantitative effects of soil bunds on surface runoff, soil, and nutrient losses in southwest Ethiopia. The results showed that soil bunds effectively reduced surface runoff and significantly decreased soil and nutrient losses.

The importance of incorporating rain intensity profiles in rainfall simulation studies of infiltration, runoff production, soil erosion, and related landsurface processes

David Dunkerley

Summary: The temporal sequence of fluctuating rainfall intensities, known as the 'rainfall pattern,' affects water partitioning at the ground surface and associated erosional processes. Runoff ratios and rates can differ significantly between early and late peak events, impacting the depth, speed, and sediment transport capacity of overland flow. It is recommended that rainfall simulation experiments should incorporate the fluctuating intensities characteristic of natural rainfall to better replicate natural land surface processes.

Impacts of soil conservation measures on runoff and soil loss in a hilly region, Northern China

Haiyan Fang

Summary: In regions where both soil erosion control and water resources are important, the impacts of soil conservation measures on runoff and soil loss have not been fully considered. This study in the upstream catchment of the Miyun Reservoir in Beijing showed that implementing different soil conservation measures can significantly reduce soil loss and runoff, with particular importance on applying appropriate measures on bare and cultivated lands.

Projected climate change impacts on soil erosion over Iran

Shahab Doulabian et al.

Summary: Over the past few decades, there has been increasing interest in studying the various environmental impacts derived from climate change. This study assessed the impact of climate change on soil erosion across Iran, finding a decrease in rainfall erosivity and soil erosion in most provinces, with some provinces projected to experience significant increases in soil erosion under future climate scenarios. This research provides valuable insights for soil and water conservation planning, hazard mapping, agriculture, and other activities vulnerable to soil erosion.

The Effect of Soil Conservation Measures on Runoff, Soil Erosion, TN, and TP Losses Based on Experimental Runoff Plots in Northern China

Haiyan Fang

Summary: The study found that soil conservation measures have a significant impact on reducing total nitrogen and total phosphorous losses in the Miyun Reservoir, with the type of land use and soil conservation measures playing a crucial role in determining the runoff, soil erosion, as well as nitrogen and phosphorous losses.
