Study on Mechanisms Underlying Changes in Agricultural Carbon Emissions: A Case in Jilin Province, China, 1998-2018

Hongpeng Guo et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the sources, characteristics, and main influencing factors of agricultural carbon emissions in Jilin Province, China, finding that the province has experienced an increase in ACE in the past decade, but recent years have shown a negative growth rate, with characteristics of low intensity and high density. In terms of reducing agricultural carbon emissions, the main factors include production efficiency, industrial structure, labor, and economic level as the main short-term influencing factor.

This time is different! Or is it? NeoMalthusians and environmental optimists in the age of climate change

Nils Petter Gleditsch

Summary: The warning about the dire effects of climate change on armed conflict is a recent variation of a scenario promoted by environmental pessimists for over two centuries. The Malthusian argument that human activities lead to resource scarcities and, in turn, to famine, pestilence, and war has been met with firm opposition from environmental optimists, who believe that human ingenuity and technological progress can counter these emerging scarcities. Despite the increasing global impact of human activities, environmental optimists still believe that long-term trends towards less violence in human affairs are unlikely to be reversed by climate change.
