Mechanobiology of the brain in ageing and Alzheimer's disease

Chloe M. Hall et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of cells and tissues are closely linked with age-related cognitive decline, deficits in memory formation, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Recent studies have shown that physical changes in the CNS microenvironment can impact mechanoresponsive neurons and glial cells, highlighting the importance of understanding the relationship between neuronal and glial cell mechanics and brain tissue mechanobiology.

Lysosomes and signaling pathways for maintenance of quiescence in adult neural stem cells

Taeko Kobayashi et al.

Summary: Quiescence is a cellular strategy that maintains somatic stem cells in a low metabolic state in a specific niche to prevent premature exhaustion in the brain. During development, neural stem cells actively proliferate and differentiate, while most adult neural stem cells are quiescent to ensure a sustainable source of stem cells throughout life. The transition between quiescence and proliferation is tightly regulated by various signaling pathways, with recent studies highlighting the role of proteostasis and lysosomes in the quiescence of adult NSCs.

Mechanical Forces Orchestrate Brain Development

Miriam Javier-Torrent et al.

Summary: During brain development, changes in brain biomechanical properties are converted into intracellular signals through mechanotransduction to control neuronal differentiation. Existing tools and emerging technologies can be used to assess and manipulate the physical properties of neurons and their environment.
