Changes in subarctic vegetation after one century of land use and climate change

Jutta Kapfer et al.

Summary: In the subarctic region of NW Russia, significant changes have been observed in species composition over the past ca. 90 years, with a decrease in species richness, particularly in nitrophilous and wet growing vegetation. Species typical for grazed grasslands and wet habitats decreased while dwarf shrubs and forest species increased.

How sensitive are epiphytic and epixylic cryptogams as indicators of forest naturalness? Testing bryophyte and lichen predictive power in stands under different management regimes in the Bia?owie?za forest

Janusz Czerepko et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the sensitivity of bryophytes and lichens as indicators of forest naturalness by comparing their diversity patterns with forest structural, compositional and historical features associated with different management regimes. The results showed that species richness of lichens was significantly correlated with forest naturalness, while bryophyte number did not exhibit a clear dependence on management regimes. Cryptogams, especially lichens, were found to be reliable ecological indicators of forest status along the naturalness gradient.
