Characterisation of mass distributions of solvent-fractionated lignins using analytical ultracentrifugation and size exclusion chromatography methods

Yudong Lu et al.

Summary: Lignins are complex, highly branched and heterogenous macromolecules, making them challenging starting materials for valorisation strategies. This study evaluated the use of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and analytical ultracentrifugation to characterize lignin fractions extracted from soda and Kraft alkaline lignins. Both methods proved useful in determining absolute weight average molar mass, heterogeneity and conformation information for characterizing industrial lignins.

Comparative chemical investigations of alum treated archaeological wood from various museum collections

Jeannette Jacqueline Lucejko et al.

Summary: The study investigated the extent of chemical degradation in wooden objects conserved with alum salts at different time points and found that the alum-treated wood is more degraded than archaeological wood not treated with alum. Variability in the preservation state of wood was observed within the same collection. Analysis of lignocellulosic polymers and inorganic compounds were undertaken to evaluate the chemical preservation of the wooden objects.
