Satellite open data to monitor forest damage caused by extreme climate-induced events: a case study of the Vaia storm in Northern Italy

Gaia Vaglio Laurin et al.

Summary: This study tested the use of Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 2 data for monitoring forest damage caused by extreme storms in Europe and found that the multispectral Sentinel 2 provided the best overall performance. However, optical data use is hindered by cloud cover, while SAR Sentinel 1, although slightly less accurate, can rapidly provide valuable information due to weather independence. Overall, Sentinel 1 is preferred for rapid assessment with the potential for refinement using multispectral and ground data.

Evaluating the temporal accuracy of grassland to cropland change detection using multitemporal image analysis

Jacob Mardian et al.

Summary: Grasslands are important carbon sinks for mitigating climate change but are at risk of being replaced by agricultural systems. The study evaluates different methods for detecting grassland conversions, with BFAST Seasonal model showing the highest accuracy. MODIS data outperformed Landsat, highlighting the importance of high temporal resolution in remote sensing for successful change detection.

The New Hyperspectral Satellite PRISMA: Imagery for Forest Types Discrimination

Elia Vangi et al.

Summary: Different forest types may have similar spectral signatures when observed with traditional multispectral satellite sensors, but can be better discriminated using hyperspectral imagery. The new PRISMA sensor has shown improved performance in forest type discrimination, especially with increasing complexity of the nomenclature system.

Combined effects of natural disturbances and management on forest carbon sequestration: the case of Vaia storm in Italy

Roberto Pilli et al.

Summary: Natural disturbances and forest management play crucial roles in forest carbon balance. The impact of Vaia storm on the forest sink in Italy was modelled, showing that carbon fluxes among pools and through harvested wood products can limit carbon losses. It is important to robustly consider the effects of natural disturbances in current accounting frameworks to improve mitigation strategies in the forestry sector.

The Three Indices Three Dimensions (3I3D) algorithm: a new method for forest disturbance mapping and area estimation based on optical remotely sensed imagery

Saverio Francini et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new 3I3D algorithm for predicting forest disturbances automatically and tested it in Tuscany, Italy, showing it to be the most accurate. A probability sampling framework was also used to estimate harvested forest area, which can produce large-scale statistics at an operational level.

Are we ready for a National Forest Information System? State of the art of forest maps and airborne laser scanning data availability in Italy

Giovanni D'Amico et al.

Summary: This study aimed to review the availability of forest maps and ALS data in Italy, and to develop a high resolution forest mask and Canopy Height Model. The resulting forest mask is currently the best available for Italy, but only 63% of the country's territory (60% of the forest area) is covered by ALS data, highlighting the urgent need for a national strategy to complete the availability of forest data in Italy.

Economic Impacts of Forest Storms-Taking Stock of After-Vaia Situation of Local Roundwood Markets in Northeastern Italy

Alberto Udali et al.

Summary: The Vaia storm in late October 2018 had a significant impact on Northeastern Italy, leading to substantial damage to large volumes of timber. The post-Vaia period saw a negative trend in timber prices due to increased sales volume, particularly in stumpage sales, resulting in market saturation.

Responding to Large-Scale Forest Damage in an Alpine Environment with Remote Sensing, Machine Learning, and Web-GIS

Marco Piragnolo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a semi-automated workflow for detecting and quantifying forest damage in the Alpine region, utilizing remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms for severity prediction. The study demonstrates that combining multiple vegetation indices can significantly improve the estimation of severity, while also highlighting the importance of considering the impact of understorey vegetation on the results.
