Effect of the direct use of biomass in agricultural soil on heavy metals - activation or immobilization?

Qiuguo Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, biomass has been widely used in agriculture due to its low cost and convenience. However, the increasing soil pollution of heavy metals poses threats to human health. Direct addition of biomass to soil can affect the bioavailability and content of heavy metals, with potential to both activate and immobilize heavy metals in the soil. Future research should focus on controlling heavy metal levels when using biomass in agriculture.

Advances in upgradation of pyrolysis bio-oil and biochar towards improvement in bio-refinery economics: A comprehensive review

Shubhi Gupta et al.

Summary: The depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the increasing energy demands have led to the necessity of exploring green and renewable biofuels. Integrated bio-refinery concept offers a solution to the low quality of biomass-based fuels and high process economics limitations. This paper reviews recent advances in bio-oil upgradation techniques, moisture removal techniques and recovery of valuable chemicals, as well as the utilization of co-products like biochar to improve process economics.

Enhancing cadmium extraction potential of Brassica napus: Effect of rhizosphere interactions

Longcheng Li et al.

Summary: The study found that intercropping oilseed rape with daikon resulted in decreased shoot and root biomass, while intercropping with white lupin increased the dry biomass of oilseed rape. Intercropping with daikon enhanced the shoot Cd concentration of oilseed rape, while intercropping with white lupin increased the uptake of Cd by oilseed rape. The results suggest that intercropping with white lupin may contribute to higher biomass and increased Cd uptake by oilseed rape.
