Secretory Organelle Function in the Plasmodium Sporozoite

Silvia A. Arredondo et al.

Summary: The successful transmission of malaria parasite sporozoites from mosquitoes to mammalian hosts relies on the timely and spatially orchestrated secretion of protein mediators stored in the apical secretory organelles micronemes and rhoptries. These proteins are crucial for sporozoite motility, cell traversal, hepatocyte invasion, and interaction with mosquito tissue, suggesting a more complex system of secretory organelles for sporozoites than previously thought.
