The 5-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale predicts postoperative fall risk in patients undergoing surgery for degenerative cervical myelopathy

Atsushi Kimura et al.

Summary: The GLFS-5 assessment scale can predict postoperative fall risk in patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy and reflect functional changes in patients undergoing surgery. The study found that previous falls and higher baseline GLFS-5 were independent predictors of postoperative recurrent falls.

Oral health and depressive symptoms among older adults: longitudinal study

Isabelle Kunrath et al.

Summary: The study aimed to describe the prevalence of depressive symptoms in older adults and its association with oral health variables. The results showed that tooth loss and dry mouth sensation were identified as risk factors for depressive symptoms in older adults.

Associations of poor oral health with frailty and physical functioning in the oldest old: results from two studies in England and Japan

Viviana Albani et al.

Summary: Studies show that poor oral health is independently associated with worse physical functioning and frailty in the oldest old age groups. Dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, difficulty eating, and tooth loss are markers that increase the risk of mobility limitations and frailty in this population. Further research is needed to understand the underlying pathways.

Original Oral frailty and gait performance in community-dwelling older adults: findings from the Takashimadaira study

Masanori Iwasaki et al.

Summary: The study compared gait performance between community-dwelling older adults with and without accumulated deficits in oral health, defined as oral frailty. After adjusting for potential confounders, individuals with oral frailty exhibited slower gait speed, shorter stride and step length, wider step width, longer double support duration, and higher variability of stride length and step length. These findings suggest an association between oral frailty and poor gait performance in older adults living in the community.

Relationship between oral function and life-space mobility or social networks in community-dwelling older people: A cross-sectional study

Motoyoshi Morishita et al.

Summary: The study found that 56% of participants were subjectively aware of a decline in oral function. Life-space mobility and grip strength were associated with maximum voluntary tongue pressure, while social networks were not directly linked to oral function. The findings suggest the need for a program targeting both oral and physical functions for older individuals at risk of or experiencing a decline in oral function.
