Toxoplasma gondiiinfection impairs the colonic motility of rats due to loss of myenteric neurons

Camila Cristina Alves Machado et al.

Summary: Toxoplasma gondii infection causes hypertrophy of the muscularis externa layer of the colon, loss of myenteric neurons, and altered motility pattern, but has no effect on gastrointestinal transit time and fecal pellet output.

Genetic background-dependent abnormalities of the enteric nervous system and intestinal function in Kif26a-deficient mice

Yukiko Ohara et al.

Summary: The study found that the megacolon and enteric neuron hyperplasia in KO mice are influenced by genetic background. BALB/c KO mice may serve as a valuable model for functional gastrointestinal diseases such as chronic constipation, aiding in research on underlying mechanisms and providing a foundation for treatment development.

Chemically-Induced Inflammation Changes the Number of Nitrergic Nervous Structures in the Muscular Layer of the Porcine Descending Colon

Liliana Rytel et al.

Summary: The enteric nervous system (ENS) located in the gastrointestinal tract regulates stomach and intestine functions. Nitric oxide (NO) synthesized by enteric neurons is involved in intestinal regulation. Inflammation leads to an increase in nitrergic nerve structures, suggesting NO's involvement in pathological processes in the bowel.

How Smooth Muscle Contractions Shape the Developing Enteric Nervous System

Nicolas R. Chevalier et al.

Summary: The number of enteric ganglia is fixed early in development, and subsequent ENS morphogenesis involves anisotropic expansion of a hexagonal honeycomb or square lattice rather than de-novo ganglion formation. Circular smooth muscle contractile waves induce longitudinal strain on the ENS network, and suppressing these waves results in the disappearance of longitudinal anisotropy, demonstrating the key role of contractile forces in sculpting the developing ENS. This study highlights the importance of mechanical forces in shaping the unique nerve network in fetal development.
