Losses of Soil Organic Carbon with Deforestation in Mangroves of Madagascar

Ariane Arias-Ortiz et al.

Summary: Global mangrove deforestation leads to significant CO2 emissions, with uncertainty in assessing the loss of soil organic carbon. Disturbed soils from deforested areas showed evidence of disturbance and significant loss of organic C and N. The study suggests the importance of mangrove conservation in mitigating CO2 emissions as deforestation-C losses may take longer to offset with restoration efforts.
