Metabolic and biotransformation effects on dietary glucosinolates, their bioavailability, catabolism and biological effects in different organisms

Zeinab T. Shakour et al.

Summary: Glucosinolate-producing plants have defensive and biological activities against pathogens and herbivores through their metabolic products. Microbial pathogens and insects have evolved detoxification and inhibition mechanisms to adapt to the plant defense system. The interest in using GLS in diets for chronic disease prevention has increased. Deciphering GLS metabolic pathways is critical for generating the biologically active metabolites, ITCs.

The glucosinolates and their bioactive derivatives inBrassica: a review on classification, biosynthesis and content in plant tissues, fate during and after processing, effect on the human organism and interaction with the gut microbiota

Kalina Sikorska-Zimny et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the content, composition, and biosynthesis of glucosinolates (GLS) in the Brassica family, and summarized the impact of processing methods on their levels in vegetables. It recommended a mild-processing strategy to preserve the bioactive impact of GLS or their derivatives in food, highlighting the potential role of gut microbiota in enhancing their bioavailability.

Effects of in vitro metabolism of a broccoli leachate, glucosinolates andS-methylcysteine sulphoxide on the human faecal microbiome

Lee Kellingray et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bacterial-mediated bioconversion of glucosinolates and SMCSO using a broccoli leachate, showing enhanced growth of lactobacilli and increased levels of short-chain fatty acids in microbial communities cultured in the leachate. Escherichia isolates from these communities were found to bioconvert glucosinolates and SMCSO, potentially leading to additional health benefits for the host.

Diet and cancer risk reduction: The role of diet-microbiota interactions and microbial metabolites

Tiffany L. Weir et al.

Summary: Cancer is a common disease, with complex interactions between diet, gut microbiota, and cancer risk. Lifestyle modifications, especially in diet, can prevent as much as 50% of cancer cases. Understanding the interplay between diet and gut microbiota helps clarify the impact of diet on cancer.

Thermosonication for the Production of Sulforaphane Rich Broccoli Ingredients

Sajad Shokri et al.

Summary: The study showed that thermosonication can enhance the yield of sulforaphane in broccoli, despite a decrease in myrosinase activity. The highest yield was achieved under the treatment of thermosonication at 60 degrees Celsius for 7 minutes, which also increased the residual level of sulforaphane, indicating the potential for converting broccoli biomass into high sulforaphane ingredients.
