Thiamine combined with vitamin C in sepsis or septic shock: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Zengzheng Ge et al.

Summary: Despite the widespread enthusiasm for thiamine combined with vitamin C in patients with sepsis or septic shock, there was no statistical difference in in-hospital mortality. However, improvements were seen in SOFA scores and duration of vasopressor use within 72 hours of enrollment.

Delta-Procalcitonin and Vitamin D Can Predict Mortality of Internal Medicine Patients with Microbiological Identified Sepsis

Alberto Tosoni et al.

Summary: Delta-PCT and vitamin D are two useful tests for predicting the prognosis of septic patients admitted to Internal Medicine wards. Delta-PCT is associated with lower mortality rates at 28 and 90 days, while severe vitamin D deficiency is associated with higher mortality rates.

Effect of vitamin C in critically ill patients with sepsis and septic shock: A meta-analysis

Fang Feng et al.

Summary: This study found that compared to placebo, the use of vitamin C can reduce ICU mortality and decrease the dose of vasopressors in patients with septic shock. However, there was no significant difference in ICU length of stay between the two groups. Further multicentre and high-quality RCTs are needed to clarify the safety and effectiveness of vitamin C in patients with sepsis and septic shock.

Summary: Despite no reduction in pooled mortality, potential benefits of administering vitamin C for 3-4 days in septic patients were observed. Further research is needed to identify patient subgroups that might benefit from intravenous supplementation of vitamin C.
