A novel approach to fabricate ceramic/metal interpenetrating phase composites by ultrasonic-assisted spontaneous infiltration

Yushi Qi et al.

Summary: The research combines freeze casting and ultrasonic-assisted spontaneous infiltration to fabricate cocontinuous ZrB2-SiC/Zn-5Al composites, and investigates the effects of ultrasonication duration on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. The results show that the ultrasonication improves wettability and facilitates spontaneous infiltration, leading to excellent comprehensive properties in the composites with a duration of 300 seconds.

Grain growth kinetics and grain refinement mechanism in Al2O3/WC/TiC/graphene ceramic composite

Xuchao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the grain growth kinetics and grain refinement mechanism of Al2O3 and WC grains in Al2O3/WC/TiC/graphene ceramic composite, revealing different grain growth mechanisms influenced by the wettability of graphene. Analysis of grain growth activation energy showed that the grain growth of Al2O3 and WC went through three stages. The grain refinement of Al2O3 grains was attributed to graphene pinning effect and intragranular structure, while the grain refinement of WC grains was due to the strong bonding interface between WC and graphene.

Effect of mechanical alloying on the microstructural evolution of a ferritic ODS steel with (Y-Ti-Al-Zr) addition processed by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS)

E. Macia et al.

Summary: High-energy milling is a common technique used to produce oxide dispersion strengthened powder steels for nuclear applications. Different mechanical alloying conditions were used to fabricate an ODS ferritic steel, which was subsequently consolidated by Spark Plasma Sintering. The study found that the consolidation ability and microstructure of the material were influenced by particle size distribution and stored plastic deformation, highlighting the impact of milling on the final powders.

Enhanced interfacial wettability and mechanical properties of Ni@Al2O3/Cu ceramic matrix composites using spark plasma sintering of Ni coated Al2O3 powders

Tao Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, an interfacial engineering design methodology was employed to improve the mechanical properties of Ni@Al2O3/Cu composites. The use of Ni coated powders enhanced wettability between Cu and Al2O3, resulting in a compact network structure with good mechanical and physical properties. Improved ceramic/metal interfacial structures and enhanced elemental diffusion were identified as key mechanisms for the enhanced properties of the composites.

Design and fabrication of TiB2-TiC-Al2O3 gradient composite ceramic tool materials reinforced by VC/Cr3C2 additives

Feng Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, TiB2-TiC-Al2O3 gradient composite ceramic tool materials reinforced by VC/Cr3C2 additives were prepared through vacuum hot-press sintering. The effects of gradient combination, thickness ratio, and sintering process on the mechanical properties and microstructures of the composites were investigated. The results showed that VC/Cr3C2 inhibited TiC dissolution and accelerated Al2O3 re-precipitation, influencing the grain size and porosity of the materials.
