Combined NMR and Computational Study of Cysteine Oxidation during Nucleation of Metallic Clusters in Biological Systems

Summary: This study investigated the biotransformation, dissolution, and reformation of metallic nanoparticles (AgNPs and AuNPs) in thiol-rich biological media. It found that Ag or Au catalyze the oxidation of cysteine to cystine through generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), providing valuable mechanistic data for the future biomedical applications of metal-based nanomaterials.
