Temperature-responsive and multi-responsive grafted polymer brushes with transitions based on critical solution temperature: synthesis, properties, and applications

Yurij Stetsyshyn et al.

Summary: The temperature responsivity of polymer brushes, driven by mechanisms such as the LCST, presents opportunities for smart or responsive surfaces. Despite PNIPAM and POEGMA dominating temperature-responsive grafted polymer brush coatings, a wide range of other thermoresponsive polymers demonstrate similar properties. This review provides a detailed account of fabrication, mechanisms of action, and applications of both well-known and other types of thermoresponsive grafted brushes.

Phase transitions of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)-water systems

Anna Czaderna-Lekka et al.

Summary: The phase diagrams for POEGMA hydrogels with different side chain lengths were shown for the first time, revealing a strict correlation between water crystallization and volume phase transition. The length of oligoether chains was found to influence the occurrence of polymer crystallization in the network and expand the range of polymer crystalline phase presence.

Highly Branched Polymers Based on Poly(amino acid)s for Biomedical Application

Marisa Thompson et al.

Summary: Poly(amino acid)s, built from natural amino acids, are biocompatible, biodegradable, and metabolizable, making them promising for biomedical applications. Highly branched polymers, such as dendrimers, have been studied for gene and drug delivery, with potential applications in antiviral compounds and nucleic acid delivery systems. However, despite over 40 years of research, they have not yet been widely adopted in clinical settings.

Thermo-responsive imprinted hydrogel with switchable sialic acid recognition for selective cancer cell isolation from blood

Yue Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a sialic acid-imprinted thermo-responsive hydrogel layer was developed for selective capture and release of cancer cells. Results demonstrated that the hydrogel layer efficiently captured cancer cells at 37 degrees C and non-invasively released them upon temperature reduction. The stable and durable SA-imprinted sites make this hydrogel layer a promising and versatile platform for cell-based cancer diagnosis.
