Combining probabilistic forecasts of COVID-19 mortality in the United States

James W. Taylor et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought forecasting models to the forefront of health policy making. This paper examines the weekly forecasting of cumulative COVID-19 mortality at the national and state level in the U.S. Probabilistic forecasts from multiple forecasting teams are combined to extract the wisdom of the crowd. The results show the effectiveness of different combining methods and the importance of historical accuracy in weighted combining.

Nowcasting the COVID-19 pandemic in Bavaria

Felix Guenther et al.

Summary: It is crucial to collect information on the daily number of newly diseased cases to assess the current dynamics of an epidemic, especially in real-time surveillance. Nowcasting can be used to adjust daily case counts to account for occurred-but-not-yet-reported events.

Summary: This study focuses on combining forecasts from different numerical weather prediction models using expert advice theory to improve forecast performance. Additionally, it explores the use of two forecast performance criteria, CRPS and the Jolliffe-Primo test, to achieve reliable and skillful probabilistic forecasts.
