Fast Permeation of Small Ions in Carbon Nanotubes

Steven F. Buchsbaum et al.

Summary: Simulations and experiments have shown that carbon nanotube channels have high transport rates when fluid flow is driven by a pressure gradient, but concentration-driven transport is also important. Measurements indicate that small ions have permeability through single-walled CNT channels more than an order of magnitude higher than through the bulk. The flow enhancement scales with the ion free energy of transfer from bulk solutions to a nanoconfined environment, suggesting that CNT membranes can greatly improve dialysis processes.

First-Principles Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Spontaneous Freezing Transition of 2D Water in a Nanoslit

Jian Jiang et al.

Summary: First-principles MD simulations demonstrate the spontaneous freezing transition of 2D liquid water within hydrophobic nanoslits, leading to the observation of various 2D ices under different pressure and temperature conditions. The study reveals the formation of a monolayer ice with zigzag water chains and a bilayer ice resembling double surface layers of bulk ice-VII in different width nanoslits at specific pressure and temperature conditions. These 2D crystalline ices do not obey the ice rule, highlighting the unique phase space accessible through first-principles simulations.

Microscopic Kinetics Pathway of Salt Crystallization in Graphene Nanocapillaries

Lifen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the atomistic mechanism of NaCl crystallization from solutions confined within graphene cells was revealed using in situ graphene liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. The research highlighted the impact of confinement on both the kinetics and thermodynamics of crystallization, offering new insights into heterogeneous crystallization theory and a potential avenue for materials design. The findings were attributed to a delicate balance between the substrate-solute interaction and thermodynamics under confinement, as suggested by density functional theory calculations.
