Poirierite, a dense metastable polymorph of magnesium iron silicate in shocked meteorites

Naotaka Tomioka et al.

Summary: Poirierite is a dense magnesium iron silicate polymorph identified in shocked chondritic meteorites. It is believed to serve as an intermediate structure between olivine and high-pressure polymorphs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses have confirmed the existence of naturally occurring poirierite.
