Why Simpler Computer Simulation Models Can Be Epistemically Better for Informing Decisions

Casey Helgeson et al.

Summary: Exploring and characterizing uncertainties in model projections is crucial for informing climate risk management. Using models that demand less computer processor time for uncertainty assessment may be more feasible, but comes with the trade-off of reduced realism. Modelers must navigate this trade-off between realism and uncertainty quantification, which requires a shift in perspective from established literature in philosophy of science.
