Direct observation of coherent femtosecond solvent reorganization coupled to intramolecular electron transfer

Elisa Biasin et al.

Summary: This study uses femtosecond X-ray scattering to observe the reorganization of water during ultrafast intramolecular electron transfer, showing coherent motions of first-shell water molecules due to changes in solute-solvent hydrogen bonding. The solvent plays a critical role in electron-transfer reactions, and short-range solvation dynamics are challenging to observe, but the combination of experimental and computational analysis in this study provides insights into the atomic-scale processes involved.

Ultrafast coherent motion and helix rearrangement of homodimeric hemoglobin visualized with femtosecond X-ray solution scattering

Yunbeom Lee et al.

Summary: Researchers utilized femtosecond time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (fs-TRXSS) to visualize the ultrafast structural changes of homodimeric hemoglobin, and tracked the time-dependent change of electron density of the hydration shell. Analysis of protein structural dynamics in solution using fs-TRXSS provides critical information in understanding protein behavior.

Effect of the abolition of intersubunit salt bridges on allosteric protein structural dynamics

Minseo Choi et al.

Summary: Salt bridges play a crucial role in stabilizing the structure and regulating the protein function, affecting the allosteric structural transition of homodimeric hemoglobin and cooperative ligand binding. Loss of salt bridges interrupts the R-T allosteric transition of HbI and leads to abnormal deceleration in bimolecular CO recombination rates. The interfacial salt bridges not only assist the physical connection of two subunits but also play a critical role in global structural signal transduction within HbI.

Ultrafast structural dynamics of in-cage isomerization of diiodomethane in solution

Hanui Kim et al.

Summary: Extensive studies have been conducted on the isomer species formed by photodissociation of haloalkanes in solution. However, the molecular structure of the precursor of the isomer and its in-cage isomerization mechanism remain elusive. The structural dynamics of CH2I2 upon 267 nm photoexcitation in methanol were probed with femtosecond X-ray solution scattering, revealing unusual characteristics consistent with either a vibrationally hot form of the CH2I-I isomer or the loosely-bound radical pair.
