Carrageenophyte-attached and planktonic bacterial communities in two distinct bays of Vietnam: Eutrophication indicators and insights on ice-ice disease

German A. Kopprio et al.

Summary: This study compared the bacterial community composition between carrageenophyte-attached and planktonic bacteria in two bays of Vietnam, revealing distinct differences in genera composition and nutrient concentrations. It highlights the potential for carrageenophyte-attached bacteria to serve as indicators of ecological status and anthropogenic impacts in marine systems.

Preliminary survey of pests and diseases of eucheumatoid seaweed farms in the Philippines

Joseph P. Faisan et al.

Summary: Farmed eucheumatoids are the top aquaculture commodity in the Philippines, but have suffered significant production losses in recent years due to pests and diseases. The study found ice-ice disease to be widespread across all sites, although prevalence rates were generally low. Further strategies for diagnosis, surveillance, and management are needed to ensure the sustainable development of this important aquaculture sector in the Philippines.

Seaweed aquaculture: a preliminary assessment of biosecurity measures for controlling the ice-ice syndrome and pest outbreaks of a Kappaphycus farm

Cicilia S. B. Kambey et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the implementation of biosecurity management measures in seaweed aquaculture effectively reduced the incidence of the ice-ice syndrome and pest outbreaks. By comparing two different farm management systems, it was found that farms with routine biosecurity measures saw a significant decrease in ice-ice syndrome and pest outbreaks, along with improvements in growth rate and seaweed quality.

Microbiome in the ice-ice disease of the farmed red algae Kappaphycus alvarezii and degradation of extracted food carrageenan

S. U. Mohammed Riyaz et al.

Summary: The impact of ice-ice disease on carrageenan quality in Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed was extensively examined using various analytical methods, revealing structural changes in polysaccharides and their association with pathogens. In addition, analysis of carrageenan degradation was conducted through sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, providing insights into microbial communities associated with the seaweed and their role in disease progression.
