The research focuses on studying the influence of surface roughness on the specific wear rate of Ni-alpha-Al2O3 composite coating. It was found that the presence of hard Al2O3 particles provides better specific wear resistance. The specific wear rate changes with the variation of surface roughness.
The aim of the present research work is to study the influence of roughness on specific wear rate. The Ni-alpha-Al2O3 composite coating was successfully coated on Al6061 substrate material by double zincating process. The presence of hard nano Al2O3 particles has increased the restriction for dislocation to provide better specific wear resistance. This has resulted in higher resistance to the specific wear rate. The surface roughness of the composite coating has significant influence on the specific wear rate of the coating. In order to achieve different surface roughness, the composite coatings were carried out for different combination of coating parameters. The design of experiments was planned as per response surface methodology. The roughness has changed by the incorporation of secondary phase particles in the matrix. The minimum specific wear rate has been noticed at lower surface roughness.
