Transactivation of Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) Infected Cell Protein 4 Enhancer by Glucocorticoid Receptor and Stress-Induced Transcription Factors Requires Overlapping Kruppel-Like Transcription Factor 4/Sp1 Binding Sites

Jeffery B. Ostler et al.

Summary: Following acute infection, herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) establishes lifelong latency in neurons, with certain external stimuli triggering reactivation. Stress-induced transcription factors have been shown to cooperatively activate the expression of the viral transcriptional regulator ICP4, required for productive infection. This suggests that stressful stimuli can lead to productive infection by activating ICP4 expression through cooperation between glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and specific stress-induced transcription factors.
