COVID 19 in neonates

Venkat Reddy Kallem et al.

Summary: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 started in Wuhan, China, and quickly became a global epidemic. The virus spreads through respiratory secretions released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. There is currently no conclusive evidence of vertical transmission in neonates. Common clinical symptoms in neonates include temperature instability, respiratory distress, poor feeding, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. The definitive test for COVID-19 is the detection of viral nucleic acid using real-time fluorescence polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Suspected and confirmed COVID-positive mothers should be isolated during delivery. Prevention and breaking the chain of transmission are crucial as there is no approved treatment for this disease.

Severe COVID-19 initially presenting as mesenteric adenopathy

Sakura Noda et al.

Summary: COVID-19 can present with abdominal pain in children and adults, requiring high suspicion. A case involving a healthy teenager initially showing isolated mesenteric adenopathy progressed to severe illness. Prior negative upper respiratory swab PCR tests before positive sputum PCR highlights the need for ongoing vigilance for new manifestations of the disease.

Multivariate analysis of CT imaging, laboratory, and demographical features for prediction of acute kidney injury in COVID-19 patients: a Bi-centric analysis

Stefanie J. Hectors et al.

Summary: The study developed and validated a prediction model for acute kidney injury (AKI) in COVID-19 patients, based on baseline renal perfusion from contrast-enhanced CT and clinical/laboratory parameters. The model, combining CAEI, blood urea nitrogen, and gender, showed good diagnostic performance in both the training and validation sets. The results suggest promising potential of CAEI as a predictor for AKI in COVID-19 patients.

Von Willebrand factor propeptide in severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): evidence of acute and sustained endothelial cell activation

Soracha E. Ward et al.

Summary: EC activation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19, as evidenced by increased plasma VWF:Ag and FVIII levels in patients. Elevated levels of VWF-FVIII complex and VWFpp were sustained for up to 3 weeks, with a reduced VWFpp/VWF:Ag ratio indicating decreased VWF clearance. Importantly, plasma VWFpp levels correlated with clinical severity indices in severe COVID-19, suggesting a potential role as a biomarker in this setting.
