Removal of polystyrene microplastic spheres by alum-based coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) treatment of surface waters

Jinkai Xue et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a complex issue in water systems due to their diverse physical and chemical characteristics. This study investigated the removal of carboxylated polystyrene microspheres in real surface waters, finding that higher alum doses generally led to better removal of smaller microspheres, but no substantial improvement in removal of particles between 3 and 25 μm. Smaller PS microspheres were more effectively removed in both river and lake water sources, with the water source significantly affecting the removal efficiency.

Evaluation of microplastics removal efficiency at a wastewater treatment plant discharging to the Sea of Marmara

Suat Vardar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the levels, composition, and fate of microplastics at a secondary wastewater treatment plant in Istanbul, Turkey. Fibers were found to be the most dominant particles, followed by hard fragments. The removal efficiency varied for different sizes and shapes of particles, with a considerable amount of microplastics still being released into the Sea of Marmara despite high removal rates at the treatment plant.

Microplastic consumption and physiological response in Acartia clausi and Centropages typicus: Possible roles of feeding mechanisms

Leonid Svetlichny et al.

Summary: Multi-day experiments were conducted on two Marmara Sea calanoid copepod species to study the impact of feeding type on microplastic consumption and energy metabolism rate. The results showed that the two copepod species exhibited different reactions to microplastics consumption, leading to changes in their respiratory rates. Acartia clausi appeared to have a more efficient strategy in coping with the adverse effects of microplastics consumption compared to Centropages typicus.

Modification of PVDF hydrophobic microfiltration membrane with a layer of electrospun fibers of PVP-co-PMMA: Increased fouling resistance

Diego Wanke et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple surface modification with polydopamine (PDA) coating, combined with electrospinning technique, was applied on a hydrophobic commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to achieve hydrophilic surface and fouling resistance for oil-water separation. This multilayer membrane showed improved clean water flux and reduced fouling during emulsion filtration compared to the commercial PVDF membrane, indicating a promising approach for wastewater treatment.

Potential Environmental and Human Health Risks Caused by Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (ARB), Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) and Emerging Contaminants (ECs) from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill

Uttpal Anand et al.

Summary: This review discusses the occurrence and abundance of ARB, ARGs, and MRGs, regarded as emerging contaminants with substantial threat to environmental and public health. It also highlights the impact of municipal solid waste landfill sites on various environmental reservoirs and human health, emphasizing the need for a novel eco-friendly management strategy to combat these global issues. The review strongly suggests future research on improving removal efficiency of contaminants and enhancing landfill management to reduce potential effects of disposable waste.

Microplastics in seawater and zooplankton: A case study from Terengganu estuary and offshore waters, Malaysia

Zakaria Daoud Taha et al.

Summary: The study reveals the widespread presence of microplastics in surface waters and the potential ingestion by zooplankton in the Terengganu Estuary to offshore waters in Malaysia. Fibres are the most common type of microplastic, with the highest density found in the estuary. Despite the increase in plastic pollution from anthropogenic activities, no significant correlation was observed between microplastic ingestion by zooplankton and microplastic concentration in the surface water in both areas.
