Adaptation of phoD-harboring bacteria to broader environmental gradients at high elevations than at low elevations in the Shennongjia primeval forest

Wenjie Wan et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in the abundance of phoD-harboring bacteria between low and high elevations in the Shennongjia primeval forest, with the bacteria showing stronger environmental adaptation and broader environmental thresholds at high elevations. The findings expand our understanding of diversity maintenance of phoD-harboring bacteria at different elevations and may help predict potential changes in organic phosphorus mineralization in the area.

Environmental adaptation is stronger for abundant rather than rare microorganisms in wetland soils from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Wenjie Wan et al.

Summary: Abundant microbes show stronger environmental adaptability and are less sensitive to changes, while rare microbes are more sensitive to environmental variations. Community assembly of abundant microbes is dominated by stochastic processes, while rare microbes are predominantly governed by deterministic processes.

Stronger environmental adaptation of rare rather than abundant bacterioplankton in response to dredging in eutrophic Lake Nanhu (Wuhan, China)

Wenjie Wan et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that rare and abundant bacterioplankton showed significantly positive correlations with environmental factors and that rare taxa had broader environmental adaptation and stronger phylogenetic signals. After dredging, environmental adaptation of both rare and abundant taxa changed significantly, with higher functional redundancy in the abundant bacterioplankton.

Bridging Rare and Abundant Bacteria with Ecosystem Multifunctionality in Salinized Agricultural Soils: from Community Diversity to Environmental Adaptation

Wenjie Wan et al.

Summary: This study found that rare bacteria exhibit closer phylogenetic clustering and broader environmental breadths, while abundant bacteria show higher functional redundancies and stronger phylogenetic signals of ecological preferences. Salinity plays a decisive role in mediating the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes, significantly affecting functions and diversities of both rare and abundant bacteria. Rare bacterial taxonomic alpha-diversity and abundant bacterial phylogenetic alpha-diversity significantly contribute to ecosystem multifunctionality in salinized soils.
