Factors affecting harmful algal bloom occurrence in a river with regulated hydrology

Jaeyoung Kim et al.

Summary: This study reveals that opening in-stream structures may not ensure improvements in water quality or reductions in cyanobacterial biomass. Despite reducing algae growth time, opening the gates promoted cyanobacterial growth downstream. Therefore, reducing harmful algal blooms may require addressing pollution levels rather than solely modifying structural operations.

Summary: This study utilized fine-resolution algal data to configure the initial conditions of a hydrodynamic model and found that hyperspectral-based initial conditions could improve the reliability of short-term algal bloom simulations compared to point-based initial conditions.
