Influence of Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (AgMAR) and Stratigraphic Heterogeneities on Nitrate Reduction in the Deep Subsurface

Hannah Waterhouse et al.

Summary: The study used a reactive transport model to analyze the impact of Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (AgMAR) on nitrate (NO3-) leaching to groundwater under different management strategies. Simulation results indicated that finer textured sediments are crucial for providing conditions needed for denitrification, while applying water all-at-once may exacerbate groundwater quality issues but also increase denitrification within the vadose zone. The research concludes that AgMAR can be designed to enhance denitrification in the subsurface and reduce NO3- leaching to groundwater.
