Perceived biodiversity, sound, naturalness and safety enhance the restorative quality and wellbeing benefits of green and blue space in a neotropical city

Jessica Claris Fisher et al.

Summary: The expansion of urban land cover and human population growth are causing loss and degradation of green and blue spaces in cities worldwide, impacting biodiversity and human wellbeing. This study in Georgetown, Guyana, found that perceptions of green spaces positively influence wellbeing, while waterway and dense urban spaces are less restorative. Objective measures of sound, bird species richness, and vegetation coverage were consistent with people's perceptions, highlighting the potential for urban planners to improve the wellbeing of residents and biodiversity conservation through specific interventions.
