Removal of metal ions using a new magnetic chitosan nano-bio-adsorbent; A powerful approach in water treatment

Fatemeh Karimi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the EDTA functionalization of M-Cs nanocomposite significantly enhanced its adsorption capacity for Cu, Cd, and Zn ions. The maximum adsorption capacity followed the order of Cd(II) > Cu(II) > Zn(II) with the highest efficiency achieved at pH 5.3. The adsorption process was found to be exothermic and spontaneous in nature.

A comparative study of CO catalytic oxidation on the single vacancy and di-vacancy graphene supported single-atom iridium catalysts: A DFT analysis

Aykan Akca et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of CO oxidation over Ir embedded on single vacancy and di-vacancy graphene was investigated using DFT. The results indicate that both Ir-GN(SV) and Ir-GN(DV) have high catalytic activity and selectivity towards CO oxidation. These findings suggest that the proposed catalysts could serve as promising SAC for CO oxidation at low temperatures, potentially paving the way for the development of enhanced-performance Ir-based heterogeneous catalysts.

Biodegradable polymers and their nano-composites for the removal of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) from wastewater: A review

Miral Al Sharabati et al.

Summary: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) interfere with natural hormones in the endocrine system, leading to adverse effects on human and animal health, making their removal from wastewater vital. Adsorption has been proposed as a promising method for EDC removal, with biodegradable polymers showing potential as effective adsorbents. The use of natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers for EDC removal in wastewater treatment is still limited, but holds promise for future exploration in sustainable adsorbents.

Orange Peel Derived-Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-doped Carbon Dots: a Nano-booster for Enhancing ORR Electrocatalytic Performance of 3D Graphene Networks

Ceren Karaman

Summary: Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots were synthesized using waste orange peel as a natural carbon precursor, and anchored to three-dimensional graphene networks to enhance electrocatalytic activity. The synergistic utilization of heteroatoms and interconnected 3D architecture resulted in superior oxygen reduction reaction activity in the alkaline media. This study demonstrates the potential of converting low-value agricultural wastes into value-added materials for energy applications.

Ceren Karaman et al.

Summary: Biomass-derived carbonaceous materials, such as graphene-like porous carbon networks, have been synthesized from orange-peel wastes and utilized as electrode materials in high-energy supercapacitors. The use of a KOH : GPC ratio of 3.0 resulted in the best capacitive behavior, offering a superior specific surface area and 3D porous structure with fine-tuned pore size distribution. The hierarchically ordered architecture acted as ion highways, enhancing electron transportation and electrochemical energy storage performance.
