This paper presents a modeling method of bolt connections considering micro-slip characteristics based on the improved Iwan model. The study uses Chebyshev polynomials as admissible displacement functions to investigate the vibration characteristics of bolted flange cylindrical shells using Sanders' shell theory. The effects of flange geometry, bolt preload, and excitation amplitude on the natural frequency and vibration response of the shell are examined while considering nonlinear characteristics of micro-sliding motion and different tensile and compression stiffness in bolted joints.
ABSTR A C T A modeling method of bolt connections considering micro-slip characteristics is presented based on the improved Iwan model in this paper. Furthermore, the Chebyshev polynomials are used as the admissible displacement functions to study the bolted flange cylindrical shell's vibration characteristics by the Sanders' shell theory. It is worth noting that the mechanical model of bolted joints takes into account the nonlinear characteristics of micro-sliding motion between the connection interfaces and different tensile and compression stiffness. Moreover, to reproduce the micro-slip motion between the interfaces, we propose an improved Iwan model considering the spatial distribution characteristics of the contact pressure and the variable normal contact load. The effects of the flange geometry, preload of bolts, and excitation amplitude on the natural frequency and vibration response of the shell are investigated.
