Mesozoic continental crustal rejuvenation of South China: Insights from zircon Hf-O isotopes of early Jurassic gabbros, syenites and A-type granites

Jin-Hui Yang et al.

Summary: The research investigated the sources, petrogenesis, and tectonic implications of the Early Jurassic rocks in inland South China, shedding light on the rejuvenation of the continental crust in the region. The rocks were found to have originated from partial melting of a fertile lithospheric mantle, influenced by subduction-related fluids/melts, with subsequent limited crustal assimilation and fractional crystallization. The study also suggests that the early Jurassic magmatism was possibly triggered by asthenospheric upwelling following the delamination of the flat-subducted Paleo-Pacific plate beneath South China, leading to the rejuvenation of the lithosphere during this period.

A Mesozoic Andean-type active continental margin along coastal South China: New geological records from the basement of the northern South China Sea

Yuchi Cui et al.

Summary: Integrated analyses of in situ zircon U-Pb ages and geochemistry on samples from below the Cenozoic sedimentary cover in the northern South China Sea basin suggest a coastal source for metavolcaniclastic and metasedimentary rocks deposited around 145-85 Ma, indicating the presence of an Andean-type continental arc during the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. This arc ceased magmatism by 85 Ma, with the last pulse around 100-85 Ma, jumping towards the Western Pacific Ocean and initiating the development of the Western Pacific-type plate margin.
