A holistic framework for designing for structural robustness in tall timber buildings

Konstantinos Voulpiotis et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the design of structural robustness in tall timber buildings and suggests considering robustness at multiple levels within a structure. It introduces methods for qualitative and quantitative calculation of robustness index, as well as a novel framework for quantifying robustness and finding optimal structural solutions based on probability-weighted average robustness indices. Additionally, a case study example is presented to illustrate the concepts discussed.

Progressive collapse capacity of a gravity-load designed RC building partially collapsed during structural retrofitting

Martina Scalvenzi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical study on the progressive collapse prevention of existing reinforced concrete structures during retrofitting. By integrating past forensic investigations and simulated analyses, the impact of retrofitting operations on the progressive collapse resistance of structures was discussed, highlighting the critical factors contributing to accidents.

Experimental study on the quasi-static progressive collapse response of post-and-beam mass timber buildings under an edge column removal scenario

C. H. Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental tests on progressive collapse of mass timber buildings under an edge column removal scenario, investigating the load redistribution mechanisms, structural responses, and failure modes with two types of beam-to-column connectors. The results show efficient load transfer to nearby columns and the superior capacity of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, with a proposed novel connector demonstrating increased capacity and ductility compared to commonly used connectors. A simplified theoretical model underestimated the test capacity by 53%.

Experimental study on the dynamic behavior of steel frames during progressive collapse

Fuzhe Xie et al.

Summary: An experimental study was conducted on the dynamic behavior of steel frames after sudden column failure, revealing significant plastic deformation and catenary action in the beams. A finite element model was established and the influence of material strain rate in structural progressive collapse was analyzed. Results from numerical simulation and Department of Defense standard equation showed that the dynamic increase factor accurately reflects the dynamic effect but decreases monotonously with structural plastic deformation.
