Molecular water detected on the sunlit Moon by SOFIA

C. I. Honniball et al.

Summary: Observations on the Moon at 6 mu m wavelength region by the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) revealed a signature of molecular water, distinguishing it from other forms of hydration. The estimated water abundance ranges between 100 to 400 mu g g(-)(1) at high latitudes, potentially trapped within impact glasses or in between grains.

Micro cold traps on the Moon

P. O. Hayne et al.

Summary: Water ice is believed to be trapped in large permanently shadowed regions in the lunar polar regions, but recent studies have revealed the presence of numerous small-scale cold traps, significantly expanding the areas where ice may accumulate. The majority of cold traps for water ice are found at latitudes greater than 80 degrees, with permanent shadows equatorward of 80 degrees typically too warm for ice accumulation to occur. This suggests that water resources at the lunar poles may be more widespread and accessible than previously thought.

On the Effect of Magnetospheric Shielding on the Lunar Hydrogen Cycle

O. J. Tucker et al.

Summary: The global distribution of surficial hydroxyl on the Moon is hypothesized to be derived from the implantation of solar wind protons. A Monte Carlo approach is used to model the diffusion of implanted hydrogen atoms in the regolith as they form metastable bonds with O atoms. The expected decrease in hydrogen concentration during full Moon is quantified using averaged SW proton flux measurements from ARTEMIS.

Summary: The study demonstrated an increase in water content and formation of hydrous species in irradiated plagioclase, as well as the escape of OH/H2O at high temperature, providing insights into the thermal stability of water on the lunar surface and aiding in the interpretation of remote sensing observations.

Earth Wind as a Possible Exogenous Source of Lunar Surface Hydration

H. Z. Wang et al.

Summary: Recent studies indicate that the abundance of polar surficial OH/H2O on the Moon increases with latitude, and remains similar when in the solar wind and within the Earth's magnetosphere by controlling latitude, composition, and lunar local time. This suggests the possibility of the polar regions being saturated with OH/H2O or receiving supplementation from other potential sources such as the Earth wind while the Moon is within the Earth's magnetosphere, compensating for thermal diffusion losses. This work provides insights for further studies on planet-moon systems, highlighting how the planetary wind can act as a bridge between planets and their moons.
