The relative impacts of dairy and non-dairy ruminant sectors on the Olsen-P status of grassland soils and hence water quality in Northern Ireland

Alexander J. Higgins et al.

Summary: Intensive dairy farming is associated with phosphorus enrichment in fresh water bodies, but non-dairy ruminant grasslands also exhibit phosphorus surplus issues, possibly due to uneven distribution of fertilizer-P and/or manure-P. Despite the more acute situation in the dairy sector, the non-dairy ruminant sector, occupying the majority of ruminant grasslands, poses a greater threat to water quality and may require regulatory measures for phosphorus management.
