Single Institution Trial Comparing Whole Blood vs Balanced Component Therapy: 50 Years Later

Juan Duchesne et al.

Summary: The study found no significant difference in survival rates between balanced component therapy (BCT) and whole blood (WB) transfusion in patients with severe hemorrhage. However, patients in the WB group showed significantly reduced incidence of ARDS, duration of mechanical ventilation, activation of massive transfusion protocol, and transfusion volumes. Further research is needed to analyze potential benefits of whole blood compared to balanced component therapy in hemorrhage-related pathophysiology.
