Phenanthrene decomposition in soil washing effluents using UVB activation of hydrogen peroxide and peroxydisulfate

Yufang Tao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the decomposition of phenanthrene in soil washing effluents using UVB light assisted activation of H2O2 and PDS oxidation processes. It was found that UVB/PDS process showed a promising alternative for SW effluent treatment with up to 85.0% PHE degradation efficiency under 6 h UVB irradiation. The impact of oxidant concentration, initial pH, and coexisting inorganic anions on PHE removal efficiency was evaluated.

Controlled treatment of a high velocity anisotropic aquifer model contaminated by hexachlorocyclohexanes

Iheb Bouzid et al.

Summary: Xanthan gels were studied for controlling the reductive dechlorination of HCHs and TCBs in a high permeability contrast and fast sedimentary aquifer, showing excellent transmission of alkalinity and persistent blocking effect. The use of Ca(OH)(2) suspension in xanthan solution demonstrated the feasibility of alkaline dechlorination kinetics, converting HCHs into TCBs.

Summary: The intensive use of organochlorine pesticides and inadequate waste management pose a huge environmental problem. This study addressed the application of different chemical oxidation treatments for the remediation of HCH-polluted soils. Results showed that the combination of hydrogen peroxide and persulfate activated by alkali showed promising results in purifying contaminated soil.
