Recovery of lactose and proteins from cheese whey with poly(ethylene) glycol/sulfate aqueous two-phase systems

Summary: This study investigated the use of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems (ATPS) for the recovery of lactose, BSA, beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin from cheese whey. Different ATPS were studied for partitioning the selected solutes, showing efficient recovery of proteins and lactose under optimized conditions. This polymer/salt ATPS method could be a scalable and cost-effective separation strategy for cheese whey and related wastes.
