How to build a biodiverse city: environmental determinants of bird diversity within and among 1581 cities

Corey T. Callaghan et al.

Summary: This study investigated how biodiversity responds to urban ecosystems at both a macroecological scale and among cities within the United States. The results showed that the species-area relationship in cities was stronger compared to randomly sampled polygons, indicating that diverse and heterogeneous cities play a significant role in supporting biodiversity. However, there is a consistent threshold where urbanization negatively affects biodiversity, emphasizing the importance of urban planning to preserve water-cover and tree-cover attributes to maintain biodiversity above this threshold value.
