The effects of bio-inspired micro/nano scale structures on anti-icing properties

Hongtao Gao et al.

Summary: The formation and accumulation of ice have negative effects on commercial surfaces and human lives. Increasing surface hydrophobicity decreases ice adhesion strength, and superhydrophobic surfaces can be created by combining low surface free energy and high surface roughness. Inspired by bio-mimetic studies on biological surfaces, artificial bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces have been widely designed and constructed, with both superhydrophobic and anti-icing/icephobic properties.
