Summary: Enabling a circular economy for plastics in Europe and beyond is an ambitious goal, but it requires overcoming various challenges and knowledge gaps, as well as assessing the impacts of chemicals found in plastics on the environment and human health. Prioritizing the substitution of 1518 plastic-related chemicals with safer alternatives is crucial, along with the implementation of five policy recommendations to support a global regulatory framework for plastics and related chemicals in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.4.
