Fe(III)-mediated anaerobic ammonium oxidation: A novel microbial nitrogen cycle pathway and potential applications

Xin Tan et al.

Summary: Feammox is a novel pathway for ammonium (NH4 (+)) oxidation and nitrogen cycle, leading to significant loss of nitrogen in natural environments. Various Feammox pathways, end products, and interactions within microbial communities have been revealed by researchers, offering alternative processes for wastewater treatment. However, substantial variations exist among different studies in terms of key functional microorganisms.

Investigation of Fe(II) and Mn(II) involved anoxic denitrification in agricultural soils with high manganese and iron contents

Baokun Xu et al.

Summary: The study showed that Mn(II) and Fe(II) can act as electron donors in denitrification process in paddy soils with high Mn and Fe contents, with coupling of denitrification and Mn(II) or Fe(II) oxidation in some locations. However, in upland fields, despite high Mn and Fe contents, the roles and contributions of Mn(II) and Fe(II) to denitrification were not significant.

Marine anammox bacteria-driven nitrogen removal from saline wastewater under different vanadium (v) doses: Evaluation on performance and kinetics

Hao Yu et al.

Summary: The study showed that adding a proper amount of vanadium (V(V)) can enhance the nitrogen removal efficiency of marine anammox bacteria (MAB), with 1 mg/L of V(V) being optimal for complete removal of ammonia within 160 minutes. Lower doses of vanadium (0.25-10 mg/L) improved substrate conversion rates and prolonged high performance, accelerating the MAB-mediated anammox reaction rate. At higher doses (>20 mg/L), none of the three kinetic models used were appropriate, with the remodified Logistic model being most suitable at lower doses (<= 20 mg/L).

Electrostimulation enhanced ammonium removal during Fe(III) reduction coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox) process

Ting-ting Zhu et al.

Summary: The study shows that microbial electricity coupled with Fe(III) reduction can enhance anaerobic ammonium removal, possibly through the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria and the generation of nitrite from the Feammox process. The synergistic effect of BES and Feammox process may improve the reaction process and microorganisms, leading to a more efficient ammonium removal process.

Synergy between indigenous bacteria and extracellular electron shuttles enhances transformation and mobilization of Fe(III)/As(V)

Jia Wang et al.

Summary: Metal-reducing bacteria, such as Bacillus D2201, play a crucial role in the biogeochemical cycle of As/Fe by facilitating the valence transition of Fe and As in groundwater environments. The addition of AQDS and As(V) significantly increases the release of Fe(II) and As(V) compared to AQDS-free treatments, indicating the importance of external factors in regulating Fe(III) reduction and As release in arsenic-resistant bacteria.

The performance of nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation processes under variable initial Fe/N ratios: The fate of nitrogen and iron species

Boyi Cheng et al.

Summary: The Fe/N ratio is crucial in regulating nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation processes, affecting nitrate reduction, Fe oxidation, and mineral production. Higher Fe/N ratios promote N2O emissions, while the maximum N-2 production is achieved at a Fe/N ratio of 6.
